Venue
Faro, whose origins can be traced back to the Tartessian culture and the first Phoenician settlements in the Iberian Penisula (5th century b.C.), testifies for the constant human presence, namely the Roman city of Ossonoba, while taking its current name from the first Arab conqueror, Ibn-Harun (8th century b.C.). The medieval castle and town walls house ‘intramuros’ (Vila-Adentro) the City Hall, the Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace and Seminar, as well as the beautiful view over the Ria Formosa.
Faro became in modern times the political and administrative capital of the Algarve region. The University of Algarve is one of the major driving forces of the city.
The University welcomes around 10,000 students, and it is spread through four campuses: Gambelas, Penha, Escola de Saúde and Portimão.
Tourism is the economic activity that brings more revenue to the city and region, since Faro International Airport is one of the main entry gates for tourists in the region and in the country, and since the geography of the Algarve is very attractive, having some of the best beaches in the world.
The highlight of the city is Ria Formosa, which is a salt marsh that extends along 60 kilometers from the Ancão river to the beach of Manta Rota, separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a complex system of barrier-islands.
The region is well known for the favorable weather that characterizes it, reaching, in summer (June to September), average temperatures of around 22 ºC.
